PAUL Ancestors in Virginia

Notes

8. Peter PAUL Jr.

BIOGRAPHY: Peter Paul Jr. or Peter Paul of Ottobine married Maria Whitmore and subsequently bought Ottobine from the heirs of Abraham Whitmore. He appears to be the first Paul to have held any public office. On July 16, 1855 he was named a Justice of the Peace for Rockingham County. In 1856 he was appointed to reassess the lands in the 2nd District of Rockingham County. He spent 104 days reassessing property and was paid $260 as remuneration. He also held the office of postmaster at Ottobine Farm from 1852 until the post office was discontinued February 28, 1859. The 1860 federal census lists his land tax value as $14,500 and his personal property as $2,500. One cannot establish what degree of education he had but from the foregoing it would appear that he could read, write, and deal with basic arithmetic. What his political views were is not easy to establish. However, there is evidence that he supported secession in view of the fact that Ottobine precinct voted 214 to 0 in favor secession the statewide referendum of April 23, 1861. Also, on April 18th he voted as a justice of the County Court to appropriate $10,000 to be used for the benefit of volunteer soldiers serving in the local militia.
